Mate of a mate of mine decided any oil would do for the little company smart car (if not perhaps any oil at all.) The net result was a busted engine. So I took it off him as a project. I had space in the garage again after all!

Thanks to mates coming over we lifted the car off the subframe. Loosening the handbrake cables took as long as getting everything else off and out. Putting those back is going to be fun!

November 12, 2010 at 10:56
Fun on a Friday night. Found the culprit!

Bought the parts online at midnight, love this country for that! £12 for a valve,£1.50 for a valve stem seal, and £22 for a head gasket. Now to decide if I am going to strip down further to check the rings.they may be gunked up having caused this, but my intention is to sell the car….hmmmm dilemma

January 22 at 4:07pm
back from holiday – time to get stuck back into this project. Taking out a Sunday afternoon.
Fitting valve stem collets without the right tools can be quite a challenge!

February 06
Managed to put everything back together for now. Draining the oil with a suction thingy is an absolute nightmare – taken 4 hours so far. Ouch. But it is done. Keen to start it but needs new oil first.

February 09 at 19:15
Ok, thats good, smartcar starts immediately after having it’s guts out. Valves sound rather loud though. One of them is very loud.

Will take it for a drive, perhaps it will settle down, will be difficult to shift it sounding like this…

Nice, sounds much better. Seems fine now.

Smoking a bit, it wasn’t before… Hmmmmm smoking a lot actually.crap, no one will buy it like this. Wonder why… Running a bit hot, perhaps an airlock? I never did bleed it properly.

Ok, I think I have outdone you @louisventer. Putting power steering fluid in the brakes was good, but I managed to top up the fuel rail with water!

The manual said to remove the clip from the thermostat to bleed: even has pictures. What idiot engineer puts the same fixing right alongside on the fuel rail?

http://www.smartmania.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=701

Beware the fuel rail has the same bloody clips that he talks about

Car now starts again! What luck, fuel floats on water, so I dunno where the cup full I poured in went! Probably on the floor, considering I left the ‘thermostat’ off. Engine bay covered in petrol. The smell gave it away! No surprise the car wasn’t starting!

Ok, running again, whew! Another spin down the road… KAPPOWWW WHEEEZZZEEE, quick engine off.f#ck.
That was a bit of a strange kappowww. Car still starts and runs.managed to drive home.I think thre turbo must have poped a pipe on the boost side. Tomorrows job

Day one I had some “WOW – why aren’t we doing that?” moments.

Day two was a bit more vanilla, but still walked away feeling that this industry is moving along at breakneck speed and that we are responsible for shaping so much of our customers future.

Day three began to take its toll and I ended up sitting round the table with some of the guys and helped out with getting the State of Search blog running smoothly!

I suppose we all have to start somewhere – this is me venturing into the world of rambling on about arbitrary stuff. I am not at all new to the online world but very new to talking about myself online. I am not one for many words – I prefer being hands-on and just getting stuck in – in many ways that is my shortfall – I should delegate more – I really should. I have the facilities to. I am Director of Operations at MediaVision – an established and growing Search Engine Optimisation firm with its head office in London, England, and another office in Cape Town, South Africa.

These last couple of years have been very exciting – we are on the cutting edge of an industry that is extremely dynamic and has gone from infancy to well established in a mere 5 years – an industry in which the biggest global brand barely existed 10 years ago. An industry which is about to overtake TV advertising spend in terms of market share. It is most exciting and we are right in the middle of it. We have been there from the start and we know exactly what it is about. The good and the bad, and the ugly, and we pride ourselves on knowing our stuff.

Anyway – on that note- it is time to work some magic on a couple of our client accounts – always so much to do – I really should delegate more!!!

Thomas Schonenberger
